WASHINGTON, D.C.– (January 7, 2023) – The Black Economic Alliance (BEA), a nonpartisan group of Black business leaders and aligned advocates, released the below statement following the historic election of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) as the first Black lawmaker to lead a party in Congress:

“House Democrats’ historic election of U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries to serve as Minority Leader is a triumph for Black communities across America. Congressman Jeffries has been a thoughtful and tireless partner in BEA’s efforts to improve work, wages, and wealth for Black Americans, including protecting and expanding voting rights, lifting Black families and children out of poverty through the expanded Child Tax Credit, and building generational wealth in the Black community.

“BEA is a proud supporter and partner of Congressman Jeffries. We are confident in his commitment to addressing the racial wealth gap through bold policy solutions that will improve economic mobility for Black Americans –– solutions BEA is excited to bring to the table to benefit Black Americans and grow the entire American economy. We look forward to working alongside Leader Jeffries and the 118th Congress.”
