FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON – Today, the Black Economic Alliance (BEA), a nonpartisan group of Black business leaders and aligned advocates, released the below statement from CEO Samantha Tweedy on the debt-ceiling negotiations:
“The Black Economic Alliance applauds President Biden, Leader Schumer, and Leader Jeffries for working to protect vital programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – programs critical to millions of Black Americans impoverished by our country’s long history of inequitable economic policies. Some of the changes proposed to these life-saving programs, including work requirements, would screen out vulnerable individuals and have no effect on employment – an economic lose-lose for all Americans.
“This debate should not be resolved at the expense of the livelihood of Black Americans or the progress made in addressing poverty, hunger, and access to healthcare in this country.”
